Manuel Calvo

Founder, Estudio MC
Manuel Calvo, Ph.D., is the founder of Estudio MC in Seville, Spain, and one of the principal architects of Seville’s world-famous cycling revolution. A biologist and ecologist by training (Bachelor’s in Biology and Ecology, Master’s in Human Studies, and Ph.D. in Sustainable Mobility), Manuel channeled his passion for urban livability into co-authoring the 2006–2010 Plan de la Bicicleta de Sevilla. This groundbreaking master plan delivered more than 180 km of fully connected, protected bike lanes in just four years—transforming a city with almost no cycling in 2006 into one where bicycles now account for 8–10 % of all daily trips and are used by residents of every age and background. Widely regarded as the fastest, most dramatic cycling modal-shift in modern history, Seville’s network has become a global benchmark for rapid, equitable, and politically replicable infrastructure. As a consultant in ecourbanism and sustainable mobility, Manuel now advises cities across Europe, Latin America, and beyond on how to design high-quality, all-ages-and-abilities cycling networks that deliver safety, connectivity, and joy from day one. His work continues to prove that any city, regardless of climate or culture, can become a true cycling city with the right plan and political will.
