David Wiens

Executive Director for Marketing and Development, International Mountain Bicycling Association
David has been in this position since early 2017 after serving as Board Chair late in 2016. A celebrated former professional mountain bike racer—best known for six straight wins at the Leadville Trail 100 (2003–2008) and victories over Tour de France elites—he was inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame in 2000. A passionate advocate for trail access and stewardship, he founded Gunnison Trails in 2006 and created Western Colorado University’s Mountain Sports program in 2012, blending his love for riding with community and educational outreach. Under Wiens’ leadership, IMBA has refocused on trail-building, shared-use education, and cross-sector collaboration, helping communities craft responsible and inclusive trail networks. He was instrumental in launching the Trails Are Common Ground campaign in 2021—a coalition initiative encouraging kindness, awareness, and etiquette among hikers, bikers, equestrians, and other trail users. Through his work, Wiens continues to elevate trail culture and public land access, uniting diverse outdoor enthusiasts in support of safer and more respectful shared landscapes.
