Eric Virag, PE

Active Transportation and Street Design, City of Austin
Eric Virag is a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) with the City of Austin’s Active Transportation and Street Design Division, where he delivers high-quality bicycle, pedestrian, and complete streets infrastructure that prioritizes safety, connectivity, and multimodal access. Since joining the Austin Transportation Department in 2019, Eric has managed the design and construction of protected bike lanes, urban trail connections, pedestrian hybrid beacons, traffic calming projects, and corridor redesigns that have measurably reduced crashes and increased walking and bicycling mode share. Before entering public service, he spent six years in private-sector consulting (2013–2019), preparing detailed transportation engineering plans, traffic impact analyses, and site-access designs for developments across Texas. A Montana native who relocated to Austin in 2015, Eric brings a practical, results-oriented approach informed by both rural and urban perspectives. Passionate about creating streets that work for people of all ages and abilities, he is a frequent collaborator with community advocates and sister agencies to advance Vision Zero and the Austin Strategic Mobility Plan. Outside work, Eric stays active playing soccer, hiking with his dog, and exploring Central Texas trails—experiences that continually reinforce his commitment to building a more walkable and bike-friendly city.
