Ralph Buehler is Professor of Urban Affairs and Planning in the School of Public and International Affairs at Virginia Tech’s Research Center in Arlington, Virginia, where he previously served as program chair from 2019 to 2023. An internationally recognized expert on walking and bicycling, Ralph employs comparative analyses of policies, systems, and travel behavior in Western Europe and North America to inform sustainable urban mobility. With over 20 years of research experience, he has authored or co-authored more than 80 refereed journal articles, co-edited the seminal books City Cycling (MIT Press, 2012) and Cycling for Sustainable Cities (MIT Press, 2021), and contributed chapters and reports to federal and local governments, NGOs, and industry organizations in the U.S. and abroad.
His work, cited over 19,000 times, has shaped national benchmarking efforts, including five biennial projects for the League of American Bicyclists, and earned invitations to present at universities, governments, and conferences worldwide. From 2012 to 2018, Ralph chaired the Transportation Research Board’s Committee for Bicycle Transportation. Passionate about evidence-based strategies to boost active travel for health, equity, and environmental benefits, he continues to advance policies that make cycling safe, convenient, and accessible for all.
