Active Transportation Project Coordinator, City of Austin
Sophia Benner is a Project Coordinator with the City of Austin’s Active Transportation and Street Design Division, where she supports the delivery of protected bike lanes, urban trails, pedestrian safety upgrades, and complete-streets projects that advance the Austin Strategic Mobility Plan and Vision Zero goals. Passionate about equitable, sustainable, and people-centered mobility, Sophia coordinates community engagement, interdepartmental collaboration, and project implementation to ensure infrastructure serves residents of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds—particularly those in historically underserved neighborhoods. A nationally recognized advocate for inclusive active transportation, Sophia serves on the Board of Directors of the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals (APBP) and is an active member of its Equity and Inclusion Committee, helping shape professional standards and policies that prioritize justice, accessibility, and belonging in the field. Her journey into bicycle and pedestrian planning was sparked by a deep commitment to environmental sustainability, and she continues to champion solutions that reduce carbon emissions while expanding safe, joyful opportunities to walk, bike, and roll. A proud Austinite, Sophia brings energy, empathy, and a collaborative spirit to every project and initiative she touches.
