Michael Gramley has been with the San Antonio River Authority (SARA) since early 2017, initially serving as the Park Program Coordinator before advancing to his current role as Recreation Superintendent. In this capacity, he oversees the development and management of recreational programs and facilities along the San Antonio River and its tributaries, driving initiatives like the San Antonio River Basin Paddling Race Series and family-friendly kayaking events. His work emphasizes community engagement, sustainable practices, and the expansion of paddling trails, such as those on the San Antonio and Medina Rivers, to promote eco-tourism and environmental stewardship. A seasoned kayaker, Gramley has paddled the San Antonio River from its headwaters to Goliad, bringing firsthand expertise to his leadership in creating vibrant recreational spaces.
Prior to his career in recreation, Gramley was a marine biologist, working in public aquariums for the state of Georgia, where he notably assisted in the opening of the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta. His background in marine biology informs his commitment to environmental conservation, evident in his leadership of events like National Public Lands Day and partnerships to educate the public on maintaining clean, healthy waterways. Gramley has been instrumental in projects like the Mission Reach Ecosystem Restoration, which revitalized the river’s natural habitat while enhancing public access.
