Description

This engaging virtual course invites participants to explore the transformative Mission Reach Ecological Restoration and Recreation Project along the San Antonio River. Participants will embark on a virtual tour of the UNESCO Spanish Mission trail system, visiting four of the five Spanish Missions—designated as Texas’ only UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This immersive experience showcases the ecological restoration efforts that have revitalized native flora and fauna, creating a vibrant habitat for approximately 62,000 individual birds and other wildlife. The tour highlights the interplay between the San Antonio River, the missions, and the community, offering insights into how this $253 million project, completed in 2010, has enhanced ecological sustainability, recreational opportunities, and economic vitality through ADA-accessible trails and innovative features like kayak chutes and ripple areas.

Through in-depth discussions and observations during the virtual tour, participants will examine the project’s impact on San Antonio, including its economic benefits from increased tourism and its role in fostering community engagement with nature. The course will also explore the historical significance of the missions and the acequia irrigation systems, which have shaped the region for over 300 years. By analyzing this model of ecological and cultural restoration, attendees will gain practical insights into designing and implementing similar initiatives in their own communities, promoting sustainable urban development and environmental stewardship.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify Native Flora and Fauna: Recognize key native plant and animal species restored through the Mission Reach project and understand their ecological roles.
  2. Understand the River-Mission Relationship: Analyze the historical and environmental connections between the San Antonio River and the Spanish Missions, including the role of acequias in shaping the region.
  3. Evaluate Project Impacts: Assess the social, economic, and environmental impacts of the Mission Reach project on San Antonio, including tourism and community engagement.
  4. Apply Restoration Strategies: Develop strategies for applying ecological restoration and recreational design principles to urban planning and policy in other communities.
  5. Promote Sustainable Design: Explore how sustainable infrastructure, such as ADA-accessible trails and water management systems, can enhance urban environments and public access.
